Best Living Room Upgrades | 3 Living Room Remodel Ideas to Increase the Value of Your Home

When most people think about renovations and remodels, kitchens and bathrooms normally get all the attention. I love to cook more than I should for an amtuer, but even I don’t spend more time in my kitchen than I do in my living room.

Most Americans spend more in their living rooms than they do in any other room in the house, especially for those who have a great modern living room entertainment center

If I was going to remodel my living room, there are 3 ideas that will change how you look at your living room. These 3 remodel ideas are the best living room upgrades because they will increase the value of your home and create more space to enjoy with your family.

Living Room Remodel Ideas

With most of the remodel ideas coming from the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, the living room often is forgotten. I believe one big reason for that is homeowners are not shown enough ideas on how to make better use of this space.

For example, do you feel your living is too small or the floor plan isn’t conducive to your families needs? Living in D.C. is one of the most expensive cities in the world, so we understand the importance of making the most out of every square foot.

I’m Ready for a Living/Family Room Remodel, What’s Next?

Many interior designers and contractors have different checklists, based on their experience and preference. I have 5 major considerations to think about before you book an appointment to speak with our contractors.

  1. Choose a neutral paint, such as white, light grey, light blue, or cream.

Fresh paint with these light colors will open up your room. As simple of a change as paint is, it can give the appearance of a much bigger, more open living room.

  1. What do you want to highlight in the living room? Is it the entertainment center, an art gallery on the walls, or a free-standing fireplace?

Regardless of what you want to highlight, you need a focal point in your living room to build around.

  1. Choosing the right flooring for your family is important because we all have different purposes and lifestyles.

For example, some families love dogs and cats in their living room. You’re going to need the proper flooring to accommodate an animal.

  1. The lighting in any room has the potential to steal the show or leave you wishing you had more light.

There are so many cool ideas that will transform your space into the modern era of home improvement.

  1. The furniture in your living/family room is where you’ll be spending your time. It’s important to make the most of your space with comfortable, practical, and affordable furniture.

What Color Should I Paint My Living Room?

We have seen and painted incredibly unique color schemes on thousands of walls in the D.C. area. My recommendation is to always go with light colors, such as blue, grey, white, and cream. Those colors always make the room appear bigger, more open, and cleaner. However, it’s all about what you want the flow or energy of the room to be. We have great contractors here to help you figure out which is best for your family.

The best part about your living room remodel is you are the one who decides what you want. Hiring Monumental Contractors for this job will come with a complete consultation with a professionally certified painter.

Not only will you get the best painters in the region, but we also have some inspiringly talented interior designers. If you really want to explore how much a great paint job will change the energy of your home, our team will leave you satisfied.

How Much Does it Cost to Paint a Living Room?

According to Home Advisor, the average cost of paint depends on many different factors, such as size of the room, type of paint, and labor cost in your area. Luckily, I’m able to see the estimates for the D.C. area and for a 330 Sq ft living room, you can expect to spend around $1,500-$2,200

One great way to save money is if you hired Monumental to remodel your living room and have the paint included. Call us at 703-552-9596 to get more information and set up an appointment with our experts.

How Would I Paint My Living Room?

Everyone has different tastes, but my favorite color is sky blue for a living room. It’s easy on your eyes, like you’re looking into a light blue sky with wispy clouds spread throughout your view. I like the blue to be bright so it helps accentuate that wispy white paint color. It’s a very warm and comfortable feeling that every family deserves.

What is a Living Room Focal Point?

This is in the wheelhouse of everyone of our certified interior designers, so I will let them go into the specifics. However, a focal point is what you see and want other people to see when they immediately step in your living room.

One of my favorite features that steals every room I’ve been in is a stand-alone fireplace. There are some custom designs that our carpenters can do with wood that will make it the centerstage in your home.

If you’re not into wood, I’ve seen some breathtaking marble, granite, and quartz fireplace frames that have the same effect. A stand alone fireplace can be built in so many different frames and styles that there's one for everyone.

How Much Does it Cost to Install a Stand Alone Fireplace?

According to Home Advisor and Google, the average cost to install a fireplace in the D.C. area is just under $2,100. The biggest considerations are the labor cost with installing a gas log fireplace line, ventilation, and customization of the design and size of the frame.

If you’re looking to save $1,000 and still get an awesome show-stopping living room feature, ask for an electric fireplace. This saves money on rerouting gas lines and piping and the labor to ensure it’s done right.

What Type of Living Room Fireplace Would I Want?

How many people have heard of a floating fireplace design? I absolutely love the fireplace designs that have a floating fireplace in the center of the living room. I would ask my contractor for a copper design (great at controlling heat) frame with large clear glass windows surrounding the logs.

There are a few factors to consider, such as do you have natural gas, could you use wood, and do you have a strong enough electrical grid. My dream free standing/floating fireplace would cost anywhere from $2,000 (with hookups installed) and up to $10,000 if there is no gas line installed in your home.

Modern Living Room Flooring

Most modern living room flooring concepts offer unique designs made from laminate, vinyl, natural stone, and pre-finished hardwood. Modern flooring ideas are essentially endless with the advancement in technology within just the past 5 years.

New flooring in your living room is one of the fastest ways to increase the value of your home. I don’t think it can be overstated enough that families spend much of their time in the living room. Having a living room that feels comfortable and inviting brings families together more often.

How Much Does Modern Flooring Cost to Install?

It really depends on the type of material you choose to install. For example, you can get carpet or custom-looking wood laminate floor for around $10 per square foot. This is an incredible option to save a lot of money and get a great new look to your home’s most popular room.

If you’re wanting to install the more breathtaking materials, stone and hardwood cost the same at $15-$24 per square foot. The more custom design in the stone and type of wood used will be closer to the $20-$24 per square foot.

What Type of Floor Would I Install?

I have custom tongue & groove oak floors throughout my house, except my kitchen (wood parquet). If I were going to install brand new floors, without a doubt, I’d choose a pre-finished cherry hardwood.

I would ask our contractors to lighten the tone and apply high-grade protectant finish to preserve the wood. I know I’m a sucker for wood flooring, but the way the light hits a cherry hardwood floor makes the whole room glow in a light brown, almost red color.

For a 13x10 foot living room, my dream flooring would cost around $3,000 in the D.C. area, but wood is really expensive at the moment.

What Else Would I Recommend to Improve Value in the Living Room?

Think about what people want out of their living room, in general. Most of us want a place to relax and watch some TV or spend time with your loved ones around the couch together. Having a custom entertainment center is always going to make a splash when people see it.

If you want an elegant look, our carpenters can build you a custom hardwood entertainment center with built-in space for electronics and TVs. I prefer to have an entertainment system that hangs on the wall and able to hide all the wires and cords going from every place imaginable.

This allows for a bigger TV and more sound system capabilities later on. The average cost for a custom built-in entertainment system can be from $500-$3,000

Why Should I Choose Monumental Contractors?

Monumental Contractors always guarantees our work with the certifications, licenses, and decades of experience to back it all up. As many people know, these are tough economic times in our country, especially with the supply chain issues.

This is important to consider because most contracting companies don’t have the resources and logistical capability as we do. This is no slight, but it’s important to know that we have most of anything you could ever want in stock and ready to be put to use.

Hiring Monumental will give you access to some of the best carpenters, masons, interior designers, and general contractors. We take pride in being transparent and honest with each of our clients from the very beginning.

For example, if we quote you for a living room repair and we sign a contract, we make sure we give you exactly what you paid for without trying to tack on surcharges after the job is done.
